Abstract

The increased risk of contamination by COVID-19 is a global concern, especially in the urban environment and its interactions. Prevention methods still face obstacles and one of the aggravating factors is the lack of knowledge about the contagion, due to the disease being recent. One of the topics that is still little discussed is the disposal of solid waste and the spread of the virus. Within this context, there are many questions about how to properly carry out selective collection with sanitary safety. The general objective of this study was to analyze the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on selective collection activities in the city of Rio Verde (GO). The specific objectives were: (a) to investigate the procedures adopted by the population and the cooperative during the period of social isolation and (b) to identify the difficulties found in the current reality (“new normal”), as well as the consequences on the cooperative's productivity. For this, previous researches were analyzed and interviews were carried out with the person responsible for the cooperative. Among the results, there was a decrease in the productivity of collection of recyclable materials, there were significant changes in the conduct of activities carried out in the cooperative and strategies were established to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus and that part of the first cases were found in neighborhoods surrounding the script pre-established by the cooperative.
