Analysis of the historical evolution of occupation in Ribeirão Preto and interferences to the urban drainage system

Abstract

This essay aims to analyze the growth of land use in Ribeirão Preto, related to the urban drainage and the floods of the Retiro Saudoso stream. For this, a theoretical study on the subject was carried out, mainly on the waterproofing of the soil to identify if it has relation with the flood problems in one of the main avenues of the city. Using maps from the years 1874, 1962, 2001 and 2025 of the stream already mentioned, it was possible to identify the total area of the waterproofed and not waterproofed regions of each year, respectively, in order to correlate them according to the populational growth and its influence downstream of the  Retiro Saudoso. It was observed a considerably increase in the values of the contribution flows that  feed the stream over the years, and this indicates that the influence of the waterproofing of the soil inside this basin.
